What is a Mainnet?
A mainnet is the main, fully functional blockchain of a cryptocurrency project where real transactions take place and where its native cryptocurrency holds real economic value.
It is the live network that confirms, records, and secures exchanges of digital assets—cryptocurrencies, NFTs, or data—via consensus mechanisms like Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS).
Unlike a Testnet, which is used for testing and development, the mainnet is public, decentralized, and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Participants can send, receive, and validate transactions directly on the network.
Updates to the protocol, bug fixes, and optimizations can still be made post-launch to improve network performance and security.
In some cases, a project may initially operate on an existing blockchain and later launch its own mainnet through a mainnet swap. This transition marks the move to a fully independent and self-sustaining ecosystem.
Mainnet vs. Testnet
Mainnet and testnet are two complementary environments in blockchain development.
The mainnet is the operational, live version of the blockchain, where real transactions with real economic value are executed, validated, and recorded. It reflects a project's maturity and allows public participation through token transfers, smart contracts, or app deployment.
The testnet, by contrast, is a risk-free testing environment. It simulates the mainnet’s conditions, enabling developers to test new features, detect bugs, and trial major updates—such as consensus changes—without risking actual funds or disrupting the live network.
For example, before Ethereum transitioned from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake (The Merge), several trial runs were conducted on the Ropsten Testnet to ensure stability before going live.
This process demonstrates how testnets are essential for validating updates before mainnet deployment.
Why Mainnets are Important in Blockchain Development?
